The Neighborhood Defender Service of Harlem (NDS) is a community-based, client- centered, holistic public defense office located in Harlem, providing criminal, civil, and family representation to residents of Northern Manhattan who cannot afford to hire a lawyer. NDS clients are represented by multidisciplinary teams including attorneys, advocates and social workers. NDS seeks law school interns for the Summer of 2020 for our Collateral Civil Defense Practice.

The Collateral Civil Defense Practice plays an integral role in NDS’s fulfillment of its holistic mission. The practice works to prevent the destabilization that befalls clients and their families due to the harsh civil consequences of contact with the criminal justice and family court systems through affirmative and defensive representation in housing, employment, forfeiture, reentry services and other collateral matters. Interns assist attorneys in all aspect of client representation, including client intake, legal research and writing, and direct client representation in administrative and state court proceedings.

Interested applicants should email a cover letter and resume as one PDF with the subject line, “Intern, Civil Defense Practice” to: Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis. For more information about NDS, please visit our website at
